Died legendary human rights activist

One of the founders and Chairman of the Moscow Helsinki group, died in Moscow. She was 91. Human rights activist Lyudmila Alexeyeva has died at 92-year life.

“Today in Moscow at the 92-th year of life died the oldest Russian human rights activist Lyudmila Alekseeva, member of the presidential Council of the Russian Federation on development of civil society and human rights, head of the Moscow Helsinki group”, – stated in the message.

“To say that we will miss her is an understatement. This is a terrible loss for the human rights movement of Russia”, – said the head of the HRC Mikhail Fedotov, whose words are reported.

As Fedotov told Interfax, Lyudmila Alexeyeva has died in city clinical hospital №15 19:30.

Alexeeva has written more than 100 papers on human rights issues. For his human rights activity has been awarded many awards including the French Legion of honor (2007), knight’s cross of the order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke gyadimí NASA (2008), commander’s cross of the order “For merits before Federal Republic Germany” (2009), the Estonian “order of Cross of Terra Mariana” III degree (2012) and more.

July 20, 2007, the day of his 80th birthday, Lyudmila Alexeyeva expressed hope that Russia would become a democratic country until 2017:

“In 10-15 years Russia will become a democratic and legal state. Whoever sat in the Kremlin, the people will not allow themselves to be treated like cattle. In countries with developed democracy in the governments, too, are not angels, but they just don’t dare to behave this way – they won’t allow it.
